HELLENIC MUSICOLOGICAL SOCIETY

The Hellenic Musicological Society has been founded in 2012 and constitutes a scientific association that represents all the musicologists in Greece. The founding members of the Society are staff members of the Departments of Music Studies from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, from the Ionian University of Corfu, as well as from the Department of Music Science and Art of the University of Macedonia in Thessaloniki.

The following goals are included in the statute of the Society:

  1. the progress and the furthering of Musicology and the development of its branches,
  2. the dissemination of information regarding the international developments concerning the scientific and professional interests of musicologists, the continuous improvement of the scientific level and the fostering of the interest for musicological study, research, as well as the rescue of all kind of relevant archive material, the assurance of its conservation and accessibility – all this with due emphasis upon Greek music,
  3. the firm establishment of the scientific and social function and status of the musicologist,
  4. the professional recognition of the musicologist, the strengthening of this occupation and the protection of the professional interests of musicologists, and
  5. the implementation of copyright regulations for musicologists.

Means, by which the upper goals could be achieved, comprise the following:

  1. the strengthening and organization of musicological research, study and the teaching of musicology in Greece,
  2. the participation in and the cooperation within international activities related to the aforementioned goals, especially within activities of the International Musicological Society (IMS),
  3. the edition of a Bulletin of the Society providing information to its members and to other people interested in the activities of the Society both in Greece and abroad,
  4. the edition of a scientific Journal, of joint volumes and of different other scientific publications and books,
  5. the periodical organisation of conferences and symposia of musicological interest, and of other scientific meetings, events and programs.

Greek Musicology evolves for the time being in between various research fields, since it can combine specialisations referring to, on the one hand, European historiography and traditions, and on the other hand, to local traditions of Byzantine Musicology and Ethnomusicology.

The members of the Hellenic Musicological Society are divided in regular and associate ones. Regular members can enroll those who are primarily involved in research and teaching of musicology and its scientific fields; a doctoral diploma in musicology is required for the admission of a regular membership. As associate members are accepted graduates of musicology and its scientific fields, even if they do not have a PhD in musicology.
